Accountant (payroll operations)
A fast-growing international provider in the maritime and renewables industry is looking for a structured and detail-oriented Accountant (payroll operations) to join its expanding team in Latvia. The company operates in the maritime sector with a strong focus on high-quality service, global operations, and a practical, no-nonsense mentality. The business is actively developing its presence across international offices, and this role offers an excellent opportunity to become part of a multicultural global team within a niche, essential industry. This is a sole position in the Liepaja office, requiring a high degree of independence, a problem-solving mindset, and a hands-on approach to complex payroll data management from Day 1.
Main responsibilities:
- Manage end-to-end paperwork related to employee hire and fire operations, including timesheets, receipts, and payroll data entry into the BM system;
- Ensure full compliance with Latvian tax, labor, and social insurance regulations across all payroll data;
- Handle timely and accurate mandatory reporting to local authorities regarding the start and termination of employment;
- Manage A1 forms, including the request, collection, registration, and required updates for short-term employment cases;
- Communicate directly with internal departments and international clients to resolve payroll-related issues and discrepancies;
- Prepare and submit regular reports to the insurance company (Anker) and assist with monthly statistical data reports regarding employees;
- Support the finance team with invoicing, expense tracking, payment reconciliations, and chasing outstanding invoices as assigned by the chief accountant;
- Coordinate operations and report directly to the Regional Chief Accountant, mother company’s CFO, and the international Finance Team.
Requirements:
- At least 3 years of substantial experience in primary accountancy with a strong focus on complex payroll operations;
- Education in finance/accounting or completed professional accounting courses/seminars;
- Experience working in companies with extensive payroll operations (e.g., logistics or larger multi-employee structures); experience in the maritime field is a big plus;
- Highly adaptable, self-motivated, and attentive to details, with an intellectually agile mind and strong logical thinking skills;
- Ability to work independently without constant supervising, take initiative, and ask critical questions during tricky operational tasks;
- Fluent Latvian and English language skills (both spoken and written) are a must, as a large part of international communication is in English; professional Russian is a strong benefit;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) and a basic understanding of computer hygiene;
- Willingness to work full-time from the Liepaja office, with a flexibility to travel to Lithuania (Klaipėda) for training and operations (20-30% during the probation period, <5% afterwards). Having your own car is an advantage.
Offer:
- Competitive gross monthly salary starting at EUR 2200 during the 3-month probation period, increasing to EUR 2450 gross upon successful completion;
- Performance- and workload-related end-of-year bonus system;
- Additional benefits including a daily lunch allowance and sports club membership (after 1 year with the company);
- Real opportunity for professional growth, with the potential to advance into a Payroll Manager role in Latvia as the branch expands;
- A dynamic business environment with short decision-making lines and an approachable management style;
- Advantage of working within a supportive, multicultural global staffing team.
